De drie letters in het midden van het kenteken hebben vanaf vandaag plaats gemaakt voor 3 cijfers. Het nieuwe kenteken voor personenauto’s, sitecode 9, is begonnen met GB-001-B.
De kentekenlol is hiermee klaar. Geen NSB, PSV, XXX, KKK, GFT of KGB meer. Alhoewel de foutste combinaties met NSB wel zijn omgewisseld. Sitecode 7 is begonnen op 19-05-2008 met kenteken 01-GBB-1. Op 05-03-2013 is sitecode 8 gestart met kenteken 1-KBB-00 en is 2 jaar later geëindigd met 8-ZVK-67.
Kentekenfanaten voorspelden dat eind april de nieuwe kentekenreeks van start zou zijn gegaan. Maar de RDW heeft besloten eerder te stoppen met de oude reeks om autoverkopen niet te beïnvloeden. Wanneer we dicht tegen een nieuwe kentekenreeks aan hikken wacht men vaak totdat de nieuwe kentekenreeks uitgerold word. De gedachte is doorgaans dat de auto dan meer waarde behoud. Een fabeltje! Kentekenfreaks wachten met de aankoop van een nieuwe auto omdat ze de nieuwe platen juist mooi vinden.
Minister Schultz van Haegen van Infrastructuur en Milieu heeft vandaag het eerste nieuwe kenteken GB-001-B uitgereikt aan Babette van Veen. Het nieuwe kenteken komt op een Kia Rio die Autohaag Zeeuw, in samenwerking met KIA Motors Nederland, kosteloos beschikbaar heeft gesteld aan Stichting Het Vergeten Kind.
De nieuwe kentekenserie, sitecode 9, zal volgens de RDW ongeveer 5 jaar mee gaan. De nieuwe cijfer-lettercombinatie levert 2,8 miljoen kentekencombinaties op.
